Sen John Whelan said the response by the Department of Health to the shocking revelations in the Prime Time Investigates programme have been “decisive and robust”.
“It should never have come to this and the HSE and Hospital have now admitted their blame and unacceptable shortcomings. The parents and families directly affected by these avoidable tragedies are to be wholeheartedly commended for their courage and perseverance,” he said.
The Labour Party senator said a new management team and governance systems would lead to the unit being “one of the best and safest on the country”.
