Little or no foundations under the road on Bracklone Street Portarlington could be to blame for noisy traffic and the rapid disintegration of the road surface.
Laois County Council are now investigating to see how much foundation exists, before they fix it.
Up to a foot deep of the road surface may have to be dug up, senior engineer Orla Barrett told county councillors at the Emo area meeting last Tuesday June 25.
“The structure of the road fell apart in March and April. If we dig it out and replace it back in layers, it will solve the problem. A lot of those houses are old and have no foundation,” she said.
When the work will start, depends on the results of tests. It was scheduled for 2013/14 but may jump the queue.
“We are looking at putting in cycle lanes in the town and may do the works in the one job lot,” said Ms Barrett.
