Emergency money of around €400,000 is needed to upgrade the “totally unsafe” roundabout at Rockview Estate on the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise.
So said Cllr Kathleen O’Brien at last week’s meeting of Portlaoise Town Council. She had requested Laois County Council to give an update on the roundabout and was informed that there currently are no funds to carry out the work. Council engineer, Mr Farhan Nasiem revealed that the cost would be around €400,000.
“That’s an absolute disgrace, it’s totally unsafe,” said Cllr O’Brien. “I can’t accept that (response), there has to be emergency money, it has to be done. Would a council engineer stand over that and say it’s safe?” she asked.
Town manager, Mr Michael Rainey said the council would try to prioritise the work.
“What do we do in the meantime?” asked Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “A lorry can’t get around it.”
