An extra grid is to be installed around 20 yards back from the culvert at Harpers Lane, Knockmay, to prevent flooding.
At last week’s meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, Laois County Council engineer, Mr Tom O’Carroll said that the work will be carried out within the next month.
He was responding to a motion from Cllr Caroline Dwane, who said there was a history of flooding there.
“It flooded before Christmas and came close to getting into the houses at Hillview Drive,” she said. “There are two problems - the gullies need to be kept clean, and when it’s raining heavy the grid gets blocked. I propose a second grid, to catch most of the water before it gets to that grid.”
Mr O’Carroll replied that a bigger grid will be installed.
