A Portlaoise woman with 14 previous convictions for theft who “took a chance” by stealing a pair of shoes was last week given a suspended sentence.

Fiona O’Callaghan, 6 Meehan Court, Portlaoise, stole a pair of lady’s shoes worth €46.99 from TK Maxx, Kyle Shopping Centre, Portlaoise, on December 6 last year.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly said she had over 30 previous convictions, 14 for theft.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client “took a chance”.

“It was coming up to Christmas and she took them for herself,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

Defence said O’Callaghan previously had a heroin addiction, and now has a place on Coote Street.

Judge Catherine Staines imposed a six-month sentence, but suspended it for two years on O’Callaghan’s own bond of €100.
