The annual Laois Vintage Rally will hit the road on Saturday August 15 this year, marking twenty years of the major fundraiser for Laois Hospice.
Committee chairman Ger Whelan is asking all Laois vintage owners to shine up their vehicles and make it a big year for the event, which has raised a total of €798,000 for Laois Hospice since it began.
“We are asking everyone to make it a special year. We are hoping to get between 80 to 100 vehicles in total, between cars, motorbikes and tractors. It is always a good spectacle on the morning, so we are asking everyone to come along to support it, and drop a few bob in the bucket for Laois Hospice,” Ger said.
The rally will first gather at Treacy’s Pub on The Heath. At 10am, the cars and motorbikes will set off for a drive to Tipperary Agriculture and Heritage Museum in Golden.
Tractors will drive in convoy to Mountrath and Ballacolla. before all return to Treacy’s at about 3pm.
Vehicles must all be at least 20 years old to qualify as vintage. Sponsorship cards have been sent to previous participants, but new ones are very welcome along, the entry fee being a donation to Laois Hospice on the day.
“Everyone gets a complimentary plaque and a meal afterwards. Every penny raised goes towards the work of Laois Hospice,” said Ger.
The event started as a ‘one-off’ he said.
“We raised ten thousand pounds the first year, that was a great start. We have a small committee of 12 to 14 people but after twenty years we are not getting any younger, so we are looking for new helpers to come on board,” he said.
