work on a big refurbishment at Portlaoise Hospital is to being next month, according to the HSE.
But the HSE did no disclose how much the refurbishment, which includes a new special care baby unit with 8 treatment spaces, an endoscopy suite, will cost or who is funding the work.
Last month, Laois County Council gave the green light for the development which also involves upgrading the existing accomodation on the first floor for the provision of a new X-ray room, ultrasound and physiotherpahy rooms and ancillary accommodation on the ground floor
Earlier this summer, there were fears for the future of the hospital and a massive march took place through to the town in protest at the possibility of the hospital being downgraded.
In a statement, The HSE said they were “currently finalising an agreement with a contractor. It is expected that work on this development will commence early September.”
