A blackout deadline of May 20 for Glenbrook Estate, Ballyroan was averted following intervention by Laois County Council with the ESB.

The estate of 35 houses was built almost a decade ago, but is still the responsibility of the developer.

At the May meeting of Portlaoise municipal district, Cllrs Caroline Dwane Stanley and Ballyroan’s Mary Sweeney both had motions to ask the council to complete works and take the estate in charge.

They called for a fence between the estate’s green and the road, among other problems to be fixed.

The council can access a builder’s bond of €144,000 to finish works.

“There are a number of outstanding issues which need to be rectified prior to taking in charge and a Bill of Quantities is being prepared,” said planner Carmel McNicholl, who yesterday confirmed that “The public lighting was not disconnected and is fully operational”.
