FINE Gael’s James Deegan is the top earner when it comes to allowances and expenses among the twenty-five Laois County Council members.
The councillors garnered more than three quarters of million euro between them €760,549 or an average of €30,422 each during 2011.
Emo based Cllr Deegan headed the list, receiving €50,148 from Laois County Council, while over the twelve month period his party colleague in the same electoral area Tom Mulhall was the lowest earner receiving €22,656.
Portlaoise Sinn Féin councillor Alan Hand received €21,089 but his figure didn’t cover twelve months as he was co-opted onto the local authority following Brian Stanley’s election to Dáil Eireann. Deputy Stanley received €3,870, bringing the twelve month Sinn Féin representative figure up to €24,959. Deputy Stanley also received a retirement gratuity of €3,971 from Portlaoise Town Council.
Fianna Fáil’s highest earner in the county was Portlaoise’s Cllr Jerry Lodge on €44,381. The only Labour councillor in Laois Pat Bowe received €26,347 and of the three Independents serving on Laois County Council, Luggacurren’s Ben Brennan was the highest earner receiving €25,927.
