Elderly residents in fear

Mountmellick Town Cllr Lisa Delaney who alerted Gardaí to the vandalism during the Mountmellick Joint Policing meeting, says she is “terrified” for neighbours of the site, which include her own relatives.

“Last night there were further break-ins. These are young thugs throwing their weight around, they have no respect, they just want to do harm. They are vandalising the whole place. The guards are trying to keep an eye but my fear is for neighbours, if there is a fire,” she said, adding that many of the neighbours are elderly, and some living on their own.

She says a fire could potentiallyspread along adjoined buildings up O’Moore Street, and Emmett Street.

Cllr Bobby Delaney also voiced concerns at the meeting , saying he had been alerted by residents of Twomey Park, who he says are greatly concerned.

“One lady told me she is living in fear, because of the petrol pumps. They have access to people’s gardens, and have been in people’s gardens. The main doors were sealed off but they are breaking the glass. The door were wide open at one point. A resident rang the security firm who were on a sign, and they was told there was none,” he said.

Cllr Lisa Delaney is urging neighbours to report activity.

“When people see someone come in or out, ring Portlaoise Garda station at 8674100, so the guards can catch them in there,” she said.
