THE two Vietnamese nationals accused of running a 400,000 euro cannabis growing factory near Portarlington appeared before last week’s district court in Portlaoise.
Van Hdang, with an address at Siddup Rd, London, and Coung Hy Cao, Avonley Rd, New Cross, London, were both charged with the possession of drugs for sale or supply, at 11 Rathmiles House, Portarlington, on August 31. When gardai raided the building on that date they discovered a fully operational cannabis growing factory. Most of the equipment was located in the upstairs rooms of the house to conceal it from visitors. Apart from the equipment and growing plants, the gardai also discovered a substantial amount of harvested cannabis.
Defence, Mr Declan Breen said that Hdang is a single mother with no contacts in Ireland. Judge Staines put her case back to September 22 for further direction. Mr Breen told the court that Hy Cao is twice divorced and estranged from his family, and he too has no contact with anyone in Ireland. His case was put back to October 6 for the preparation of a book of evidence.
