POWER wash the roundabouts and Main Street in Portlaoise and apply weed killer where necessary.
That was the motion put forward at the recent Town Council meeting by Cllr Rotimi Adebari.
“There are dirty bricks and it’s very dull looking,” he said. “We should make it brighter and more welcoming for people coming to the town.”
Cllr Kathleen O’Brien remarked that the roundabouts need to be swept more than power washed and the weeds need to be removed. She said that people throwing their chewing gum on the ground is the real problem in the town.
Cllr Alan Hand suggested that the proposal be extended to the main thoroughfares of Portlaoise as well.
“The rate payers deserve nothing less,” he said.
Cllr Willie Aird had a novel suggestion for bypassing the normal procedure of tendering for contracts for the work to be completed.
“My friend has a tractor and a power washer,” he offered.
Farhan Nasiem, town engineer replied that the spraying of weed killer is currently being carried out in Portlaoise, but there is no programme in place for power washing.
