He appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court via video link.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the  man had walked into Harry Corrys in Portlaoise with another male and taken duvet covers valued at €183 on August 12, 2025. Sgt Kirby said the goods weren’t recovered. He said the defendant had 84 previous convictions.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client was pleading guilty to the offence. He said the man “was entrenched in addiction” at the time of the offending. Mr Fitzgerald told the court that his client was serving a prison sentence and had a release date in January 2027. He asked for some time to consult with his client in respect of mitigation.

Judge Susan Fay requested a probation report and governor’s report. She adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on May 25.
