A commercial vehicle driver found with drugs in Laois was discovered to have gone for a shocking number years without paying road tax, local Gardaí have claimed.

The Roads Policing Unit of Laois Offaly Garda Division stopped the driver on Saturday, June 3 at an undisclosed road in the county.

They say that they discovered cannabis in the vehicle.

Then they found that the owner had not paid road tax in five and a half years, or passed a CVRT (Commercial vehicle Roadworthiness Testing) in two years.

The driver was arrested and is now facing a court appearance.

It is one of two arrests made at the checkpoint where cannabis was discovered in a vehicle, the division say.

"Laois RPU performing a checkpoint yesterday arrested two drug drivers and small quantity of cannabis was recovered from both vehicles. One vehicle had no CVRT for 2 years and had no road tax in 5 and a half years! Court prosecution to follow."
