Safety measures are coming to two Portlaoise estates after claims that a child was hit by a vehicle and their leg broken.

Speed ramps are going to be installed in the estates of Colliers View and Hawthorn Way in Esker Hills.

Cllr Thomasina Connell gave an account of the road crash when she tabled a motion to ask for the ramps at the June meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

"This was an area where six weeks ago a child was actually struck and their leg was broken.

"We have been looking at ways to do traffic calming. I am delighted that ramps will be installed.

"It sends out a strong message regarding speeding in housing estates.

"When cars enter, it seems they pick up speed on a straight stretch which is a considerable concern. I am glad you have found a spot for a ramp. Similarly in Colliers View, thank you," Cllr Connell said.

In reply, area engineer Wes Wilkinson said his office will install a traffic calming ramp in both of the estates in the coming weeks.
