Cars 'rolling out' at Laois junction with hidden Stop signs

A hidden Stop sign and faded road markings at a junction in Laois are causing drivers to go out onto the junction without stopping, causing potential dangers.

So says a Portlaoise Municipal District councillor who is asking Laois County Council to improve the junction.

Cllr Barry Walsh tabled a motion to the September meeting of the district for the junction.

He said it is the V junction in Tonduff, Abbeyleix, at Monument Cross.

"In the reports I've had, the line marking is gone, it's faded. The stop sign is hidden. People are rolling out to see if traffic is coming, instead of stopping," he said.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly who lives in Abbeyleix seconded the motion.

"I had a motion on this, I asked to carry out these works, but we're all working together," he said.

The council plans immediate works, plus a longer term safety overhaul of the junction.

In reply to the motion, the area engineer Wes Wilkinson said that line marking was to be carried out in mid September.

He said he would arrange a second Stop sign in the vicinity of the junction, but bigger work is planned too.

"The Portlaoise MD office will submit an application for funding for futher safety measures to be carried out in 2023," Mr Wilkinson said.
