Electric scooter users exiting a laneway onto a Portlaoise town pedestrian crossing, are causing a traffic danger, a local councillor has highlighted.

Fine Gael Cllr Willie Aird says he got a fright himself at the Pepper's Lane pedestrian crossing, near the bottom of the Main Street between the Chocolate Brown and Square coffee shops.

The narrow walkway exit is between buildings, making it difficult for motorists to see people about to cross it.

He wants Laois County Council to install a barrier in front of the walkway exit, to prevent unexpected exits onto the Main Street.

"When you come out of Pepper's Lane, they can come straight across the road. It's dangerous for pedestrians, and very dangerous for cars.

"One lady got an awful fright. The people crossing were long gone.

"I got 0one of the biggest frights I ever got driving. They came straight out on a scooter. I slammed on the brakes. It is extremely dangerous. We need a barrier so they have to slow down," Cllr Aird said.

He requested pedestrian safety measures at the pedestrian crossing, in a motion tabled to the February meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

In reply, Laois County Council say they are working on installing surface flashing lights along the crossing.

"The council are currently procuring the supply and installation of surface imbedded flashing warning lights to increase visibility and awareness at this crossing".
