Wheelchair warnings wanted on rural Laois road

Traffic calming sought to protect Muiriosa Foundation residents

Wheelchair warnings wanted on rural Laois road

Wheelchair User warning signs are to be placed on a rural Laois road.

Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Buggy requested the signs, in a motion he tabled to the March meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

"There is a respite house run by the Muiriosa Foundation for which I'm asking for road markings and signage to calm traffic and make drivers aware of the presence of wheelchair users on the road," Cllr Buggy said.

Cllr Buggy also requests the council to carry out drainage works at the same location, which is Killeen.

He said there is surface water on the road verge flowing out of nearby springs, and asks that the drainage works be a priority. Cllr Buggy wants the council to apply for funding to do a bigger job at a later date.

In reply, the Portlaoise Municipal district senior engineer Wes Wilkinson said that initial drainage works will be carried out as a priority on the L-2133 at Killeen. A further application will also be lodged for a bigger drainage job.

"Portlaoise MD Office will arrange for SLOW road markings and for Wheelchair User signage to be installed at this location," Mr Wilkinson added.
