When the sun shines in Abbeyleix in Laois, it is creating a traffic danger for schoolchildren.
That is according to Fine Gael Cllr Barry Walsh.
He tabled a motion to the March meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking for additional spots or beacon lights, to the new pedestrian crossing outside Scoil Mhuire Abbeyleix. He said it would be similar to the ones at a pedestrian crossing in Ballyroan.
“There is only one light at the top. When it’s very sunny it’s difficult to see the light flashing. I saw this when we had good weather recently. A spot would hit you straight on, it’s an easy fix,” he said.

Laois County Council's road designers will now assess the crossing and install the extra light if they see fit.
