Five months of roadworks are about to start to build a major roundabout on the busy Dublin Road in Portlaoise, and looks as it it will take longer than first expected.
Laois County Council has given notice on the long awaited construction of the enlarged roundabout on the Dublin Road at Collier's Lane and Downey's new filling station.
The bad news for drivers and school parents is that it is going to take 21 weeks instead of 16 weeks, with work throughout summer not scheduled to be finished until after school resumes in September.
Temporary traffic arrangements will set up at the junction with Colliers Lane early on Monday morning, April 20.
The council says that roadworks will last until September 9. The roadworks will be happening from 7am until 5pm.
The work was delayed last February and was then to take 16 weeks, including a second roundabout on Dublin Road, Rath Rua.
The council say the one at Colliers Lane is aimed to solve "ongoing traffic congestion", and make it safer for cyclists, pedestrians and vulnerable road users.

That new roundabout will link to hundreds of homes and two secondary schools serving nearly 2,000 pupils. Work is soon starting. The roundabout's fourth exit will be into the new Downey's service station.Downey's roundabout is "at capacity", Laois County Council CEO Michael Rainey said last February.

"A new four arm raised roundabout will be constructed in the coming months, to replace the existing roundabout. The existing roundabout is at capacity, and the junction is the source of ongoing traffic congestion and poor provision for cyclists, pedestrians and vulnerable road users," Mr Rainey said.
