UPDATE: Portlaoise badly hit by traffic as M7 motorway remains closed

Portlaoise town has been badly hit by a build up of traffic today, Thursday, May 24.

A crash on the M7 at Junction 16 at The Heath in Portlaoise around 10am resulted in gardai closing the motorway and diverting traffic via the old Dublin Rd (R445) to Portlaoise town centre before rejoining the M7 at J17 Portlaoise Centre.

The motorway was supposed to reopen at 1pm, however an update from AA Roadwatch says the road will remain closed until further notice.

The effects of the diverted traffic can still be felt in Portlaoise approaching school pickup times. Traffic was particularly heavy on the Dublin Road and Stradbally Road in Portlaoise between 1-2pm.

It has been reported to the Leinster Express that traffic was worse than Electric Picnic weekend.

Laois Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Anthony Tynan, spoke to the Leinster Express around 3pm.

"A truck crashed into the side of the motorway. There were no serious injuries but cleaning the truck off the road took a while. The fire service, gardai and the Motorway Emergency Response Service attended the scene. The gardai have a diversion in place and it is moving fairly well now. It should be back to normal shortly," he said.

All emergency services were at the scene of the crash this morning. It is understood a truck was involved in a crash.
