One out of every five Laois drivers has penalty points on licence

High penalty point rate in Laois.

One in five Laois drivers has penalty points according to the latest official statistics.

Central Statistics Office figures show that a total of 9,599 driving licence holders in Laois had points in 2017. Of these, 7,081 had between one and three points.

Between four and six points had been incurred by 2,111 drivers while 407 motorists had more than seven points.

Of the 47,614 licence holders in Laois, 20.2% had penalty points. This is higher than the national average of 17.7%.

Laois also had the highest rate of people on points in the midland counties of Longford, Offaly and Westmeath. 

Laois was joint fifth in the national table of counties with a high rate of drivers on points.

Wexford, Galway, Kildare and Kilkenny were the top four counties with a high proportion of drivers with points. The lowest rate of points awarded was Donegal.

In total 506,587 people were on penalty points in 2017 when nearly 2.9 million people held driving licences.
