A call has been made to repaint the yellow box outside the Midlands Prison, to help staff trying to exit onto the busy road.

"It's the prisoners supposed to not escape," says former prison officer and now Portlaoise Municipal District Councillor, Noel Tuohy.

He tabled a motion to the February meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District.

He asks that the yellow boxes on the Dublin road be repainted by Laois County Council.

He also asks for the same on the Block Road, which has the entrance and exit junction for Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise.

“A prison officer said to me it's the prisoners who are supposed not to escape, not us,” he said.

Cllr Touhy added that the roads now have extra traffic and junctions are busy.

In reply the area engineer Wes Wilkinson agreed to examine the yellow boxes on both roads and refresh road markings where required in the coming weeks.
