Flooding has worsened in Mountmellick this afternoon, with the main road through the town now flooded and partially closed.
The Owenass River in Irishtown has burst its banks, completely flooding the playground, the MDA grounds, and now flowing down the N80 road towards the town.
Sonas playschool has closed, with the MDA expected to follow.
These dramatic photos by Denis Byrne shows just how serious the flooding has become in the town.
Already today the two main primary schools were closed, and houses have been flooded, on Davitt Road, Derrycloney and Manor Lane. See more here.
Laois County Council has officially confirmed that the road is closed, from Glanbia on the Main Street, to the MDA.
A diversion has been set up via Patrick Street and the hospital road. From Portlaoise, turn right after the petrol station, then left at the next roundabout.
