Staff at Mountmellick Youth & Family Resource Centre
A Laois town's Youth and Family Resource Centre is to receive €10,000 from the Government's Dormant Account Fund.
Mountmellick YFRC, based in the MDA, offers support to families, children, groups and also gives counselling, as a Government funded service to the town which is classed as an economically disadvantaged area.
Last March, its Manager Mike Farrell had told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that regular funding was needed urgently for their therapeutic services, as demand had shot up by up to 70% in the last twelve months.
Sean Fleming TD, Minister of State, welcomed the €10,000 announcment, made on Wednesday, June 5.
"The funding will be used to address the substantial need and reduce waiting lists for the community-based counselling service.
"This will support an increase in counselling an psychotherapy services for children and young people who are disadvantaged socially and economically.
"I welcome this funding for Mountmellick Youth and Family Resource Centre. The group does invaluable work for young people in the area. I want to thank them for everything they do.
"It is important to support community-based organisations like Mountmellick Youth and Family Resource Centre, which know the challenges that young people face in their local area and which can use funding to direct it where it is needed the most," he said.
