A big stretch of Mountmellick's main street "in an awful state" is going to be dug up and resurfaced in 2025, but the job has already been delayed for years, waiting for waterworks by Uisce Éireann.
Laois County Council has confirmed that it is going to resurface the street from its T- junction with the N80 at Tirlán, to the junction of Connolly Street.
"It is proposed to include this section of roadway in the 2025 Annual Road Works Programme. This is dependent on Uisce Éireann carrying out watermain infrastructural works on Parnell Street and Sarsfield Street," engineer Rory O'Callaghan said at the October meeting of the Mountmellick Borris-in-Ossory Municipal District.
He was answering a motion by Cllr Paddy Bracken, asking for work on the "very poor condition" of the R422 section of road.
"It's in an awful state. We are long promised an upgrade. Last year it was to be done, the road was held, and the year before.
"Nothing has been done. I hope going into 2025 that Irish Water deliver. The whole street is breaking up. It's in a shocking state. I'll keep after it and ask you to follow up," he said.
His motion was seconded by Cllr Seamus McDonald.
"It is all collapsing," he claimed.
