Finally: Laois housing estates set to receive new footpaths

An entrance to six housing estates in Mountmellick is set to receive new footpaths.

The single entrance on Harbour St serves houses in Kirwan Park, Harbour Court, Cullenwood, Cullenbeg Park, Silverbrook and Silverwood.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Paddy Bracken welcomed this news, having campaigned for these footpaths since 2024.

Mr Rory O'Callaghan SEE with Laois County Council has said that the Area Office will meet on-site with the Cllr Bracken and agree the sections of footpaths to be replaced.

"These footpath replacement works will be considered in this years works programme," Mr O'Callaghan said.

Cllr Bracken welcomed this news.

"It is the main entrance into the biggest section of estates in Mountmellick, there's Kirwan Park and Silverwood, and the paths are in a shocking state," Cllr Bracken said.

"A lot of people use these paths and there are children walking to school here. It certainly needs to be addressed, so I look forward to the work being done here," he said.

This motion was seconded by fellow Fianna Fáil Cllr Seamus McDonald.

This is the second year Cllr Bracken has requested the replacement of footpaths at the entrance to the Mountmellick housing estate.

Upon Cllr Bracken's request in March of 2024, Laois County Council told Cllr Bracken asked Director of Services Donal Brennan if there is money set aside for footpaths in the district.

Mr Brennan confirmed the limited cash.

"We get grants from the Department of Transport for blacktop [road] maintenance, not paths. That has to come out of your own budgets," the Director replied.

"There is no external subsidy from road maintenance. The only budget is the councillors' discretionary budget. Some paths are done when there is a road improvement, or under Active Travel funding," he said.

Laois County Councillors receive around €35,000 of a discretionary fund for community projects, road repairs, streetlight and footpath works.

This motion was tabled at the March sitting of Laois County Council's Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
