The Down Syndrome Laois branch has been given an enormous donation by a local Macra group.

The incredible sum of €20,560.75 was raised by Mountmellick Macra when they held their third annual Christmas Light Up Truck and Tractor run in December 2024, a huge event that raised much more than just smiles along the route through Clonaslee, Rosenallis and Killeigh.

To mark World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, Mountmellick Macra formally handed over the giant cheque to Down Syndrome Laois.

The handover took place in Polly's at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel where Down Syndrome Laois members were enjoying a celebration to mark their annual day.

Mountmellick Macra shared the great photo with this message.

"Happy World Down Syndrome Day! To coincide with today’s celebration some of our committee joined members of the Laois Down Syndrome branch, who were marking the day, to present them with a cheque for €20,560.75, being the proceeds of last years event.

"2024 was our biggest event yet and we are beyond grateful to each and everyone who donated so generously and gave their time so selflessly to ensure our event was a success.

"It was an absolute pleasure to work with Laois Down Syndrome. In the months leading up to the Run we learned so much about the organisation and the fantastic work it does. It is fair to say that we forged many new friendships with the members and their families.

"Thank you one and all, until next year," Mountmellick Macra said.

Down Syndrome Laois branch, currently chaired by Mark McManus, supports over 45 Laois members with Down Syndrome, under the umbrella of Down Syndrome Ireland.

Their focus is on lifelong support so members have meaningful jobs and as much independence as possible. They give reduced rates on therapeutic services as well as work skills training. DSL also hold social events and educational talks for families.

The charity gets only around 20% of its funding through government grant, mostly relying on fundraisers, such as their recent St Patrick’s Day shamrock sales, some of which was grown by members in Laois Down Syndrome's polytunnels.

The group thanked Mountmellick Macra.

"On behalf of our Laois Branch, we are lucky to have met such wonderful people who gave so much of their time to help raise funds that will benefit our members with vital therapies. Thank you so much. We are truly humbled by your generosity and the effort you have all made for our branch," the group said.
