High water levels in Mountmellick due to heavy rain this week
The issue of flooding in Laois has been raised by local councillors after several roads were closed due to floods on Tuesday, November 11.
Cllr Paddy Bracken said that Mountmellick could have been "in serious trouble" on Tuesday had the rain not stopped and the water levels gone down.
Flooding in Mountmellick and Mountrath was discussed at the Borris in Ossory/Mountmellick council meeting on Wednesday, November 12.
Raising the issue, Cllr James Kelly described the flooding situation in Mountrath as "very precarious", noting that the school, health centre and some residences were very close to being flooded during the heavy rain.

Cllr Kelly urged that the river in Mountrath be cleared from any blockages which are causing the flooding. He told the council: "We have to take a look at this again because the river is blocked there and we were lucky last night. I'd be imploring that we'd speed this up and have a look at it and get into the river and clean it out."
Cllr Ollie Clooney also remarked about the need to clear the rivers to avoid any major flooding, despite the issue already being raised last year. Commenting on the situation, Cllr Clooney said: "This is a serious problem. There's thousands of acres flooded this morning for the want of just taking a few trees out here and there and cleaning it up."
Two motions regarding flooding in Mountmellick were also raised during the meeting by Cllr Paddy Bracken. Cllr Bracken asked that the council address the flooding on the left side of the road L-20974 New Road in Mountmellick as well as the flooding on the footpath on the Bay Road.
The council told Bracken that both issues would be investigated and addressed.
He also enquired about the council providing a sweeper for the hazardous build up of leaves in the area which are exacerbating the flooding problem by blocking gullies.
Cathaoirleach of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District, Cllr Conor Bergin, assured that the council are monitoring the water levels and pumps are available if required.
