Lidl Ireland GmbH is inviting residents of a Laois town to a meeting ahead of work beginning on a new store.

The discount supermarket business got planning approval in early April from Laois County Council to build a supermarket in Mountmellick. The decision follows a petition locally in support of the shop, which will create 30 jobs, reverse dereliction and add competitive options to shoppers.

It will be on the site of the derelict former Nissan and Chevrolet car dealer Central Garage. It includes several vacant houses either side, with all to be demolished before the store can be built along the main N80 street through the town.

Lidl estimates a six month construction period, see our breaking story here.

It issued the message via community groups on Thursday, inviting them to a meeting.

A Lidl representative also confirmed the statement to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"Following the approval for a new store in Mountmellick, Lidl Ireland is organising a meeting with the local community. They will be answering any questions we may have," the message said.

The event will be held at the MDA in Irishtown, Mountmellick on Wednesday evening, April 22, from 5pm to 7pm.

It will be Lidl's third Laois store, with others in Portlaoise and Portarlington, with Mountmellick being the next most populated Laois town at 5,000 residents. Another store is due to be complete in early summer in Graiguecullen on the Laois Carlow border.
