Mountmellick Christmas Tree in Laois
Christmas traditionally kicks off in Mountmellick in Laois once their iconic tree lights up, and the hard working committee has announced the date.
In recent years the tree is officially switched on just hours before the Late Late Toy Show starts on RTE 1.
Christmas Tree committee chairman Ger Lynch has confirmed that once again the tree is planned to light on Friday November 30, at 8pm.
The ceremony traditionally includes an ecumenical blessing, and a big countdown, with St Joseph's Accordion Band heralding in Christmas with festive tunes in O'Connell Square.
The whole town will be once again festooned with lights, thanks to the bright sparks in the Christmas Lights committee who this year raise thousands of euros to pay for the costly lights, by selling new yellow bulbs to the public in memory of loved ones, with ribbons in all their names to hang in O'Connell Square.
The festive fun will continue on Sunday December 2 with the Mountmellick Christmas Fair. Over 45 stalls selling seasonal crafts and foods will create the ideal festival afternoon, from 1pm to 6pm. There will be carol singing, Santa in his grotto, mulled wine, a huge raffle, and live music and dancing by local groups.
