A Laois County Councillor has called for repairs to a housing estate in Mountrath.

Independent Cllr James Kelly has requested that Laois County Council install identification sign and repair public lighting at Rushall Housing Estate, Shannon Road, Mountrath.

This is one of the bigger housing estates in Mountrath," Cllr Kelly said.

"We are in the process of getting a committee together there, and they are looking after it very well themselves.

"It just needs a little bit of tender, loving care from the Council to give them that boost and drive it on. It is just off the Shannon road, and I want to thank the contractors for the great road resurfacing works that they are doing there at the minute," he said.

"The fact that I was able to get in speed ramps on that road is going to make a huge difference to road safety.

Motorists and road users should still be adhering to the speed limits, as well as us having to put in for these speed safety measures," Cllr Kelly finished.

Laois County Council's Housing and Roads Department issued a joint reply, that the Housing Department will arrange for a naming sign to be installed at this address, and Road Design will meet with Cllr Kelly and assess the current public lighting in Rushall Housing Estate.

"Maintenance will be carried out as per required," the Council responded.

Fine Gael Cllr John King seconded this motion.

"Whatever works can be done to make an area safer, I fully support," he said.

This motion was tabled at the May sitting of Laois County Council's Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick Municipal District.
