The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick where she subsequently died
A GARDA investigation is underway after a woman who was air-lifted to hospital following an incident on Lough Derg in County Clare died.
The alarm was raised shortly before 6.30pm on Thursday when emergency services were alerted to the incident at Twomilegate, close to Killaloe, in the east of the county.
Members of the Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service were dispatched and the Cork-based air ambulance, Aeromed 01, also attended the scene.
The woman, aged in her 50s, received some medical attention on the shore before being taken to University Hospital Limerick where she subsequently died.
A garda spokesperson has confirmed a post-mortem is to take place and that a file will be prepared for the local coroner.
It's not known, at this stage, if the woman got into difficulty while swimming or if she became unwell while in the water.
