Rail passengers across Ireland will no longer have to queue up to print their tickets as Irish Rail are set to roll out e-tickets on all intercity services.
The e-tickets, which use QR codes, have been available for certain low-fare and semi-flex tickets for the last few months, but will be available for all ticket types from Tuesday, January 23.
E-tickets will allow passengers to amend or cancel each individual leg of their journey (subject to the Terms and Conditions of each fare type), which was previously not possible on tickets that had already been printed.
Gates equipped with scanners for the QR codes will be clearly identified in blue. Any customer in a location with no QR scanner can present their ticket to a member of staff at the barrier who will open the gate once a valid ticket has been provided.
Future developments will see the implementation of an 'Add to Wallet' feature for customers to download their QR code ticket to their mobile wallet app.
In the meantime, customers should download the PDF (which includes their QR code ticket) to their mobile device, or print the PDF ticket at home in advance of travel.
The move has been welcomed as "long overdue" by Feljin Jose of the Dublin Commuters Coalition, and a Local Area Representative in Cabra-Glasnevin for Dublin City Council.
"This, along with the TFI Go app, will make public transport easier to use for a lot of people," he said.
