A man who was hunting in the Rearcross area of County Tipperary at the time a local soccer player was shot in the arm earlier this month has presented himself to gardaí in recent days.

The accidental shooting took place on the night of January 6 at Rearcross FC grounds when the local team were playing a fixture.

The bullet was removed from the injured player’s arm at University Hospital Limerick and he spent a number of hours undergoing treatment.

He is said to be making a good recovery.

Sgt Declan O’Carroll of Nenagh Garda Station confirmed on Tuesday that a male had been interviewed in recent days.

He said a number of firearms and ammunition since presented to gardaí have been sent to the ballistics unit in a bid to ascertain whether one of the guns in the possession of the individual may have been the source of the stray bullet.

“This is the only individual who has come forward in response to our appeal and the investigation into the case is ongoing,” said Sgt O’Carroll.

In its most recent update on the injured player, Rearcross FC said he continued to make a good recovery and called for privacy.
