Murder probe launched by gardaí as remains confirmed as missing Kieran Quilligan

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after a post-mortem confirmed that human remains discovered in Cork this week as those of missing person Kieran Quilligan.

Mr Quilligan, 47, was reported missing from Cork city centre on September 1 last year.

Gardaí carried out extensive CCTV enquiries which tracked Mr Quilligan's last known movements through Cork city centre, from Andersons Quay towards Sullivan’s Quay and onto Proby’s Quay.  He was last seen entering St Finbarr’s Place, off Proby’s Quay.
 
In addition to tracking Kieran’s movements on CCTV, gardaí spoke to a number of witnesses and carried out a search along St Finbarr’s Place (St Finbarr’s Street).
On Monday, his remains were found during a targeted search by gardaí aided by a dog unit.
"Following the discovery of human remains in Rostellan, Co. Cork, on Monday 29th January 2024, a post-mortem examination was carried out, and these remains have been identified as Kieran Quilligan," a garda statement read.

"The investigation has today, Thursday 1st February 2024, been upgraded to murder, and the investigation is being led by a Senior Investigation Officer from Bridewell Garda station, Cork."

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information on the murder of Kieran Quilligan to contact Bridewell Garda Station on (021) 494 3330, the Garda Confidential Line on (1800) 666 111 or any Garda Station.
