Woman in her 60s caught with cannabis worth almost €500,000 at Shannon Airport

A woman in her 60s has been arrested after being caught with €500,000 worth of cannabis at Shannon Airport.

As a result of risk profiling, Revenue officers seized 23kg of herbal cannabis and 3.3kg of cannabis resin with an estimated value of €480,000 at Shannon Airport yesterday (April 7).

The illegal drugs were discovered within the baggage of the female passenger, who had disembarked a flight from Faro, Portugal.

She was subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in Co Clare.

Investigations are ongoing.

This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.
