Iarnród Éireann are rolling out their first fare increases in almost five years across Intercity services across the country.

The new fares will come into effect across the TFI network of public transport services this Monday, June 24.

Intercity fare are set to increase by an average of  4% on Economy 1 (Dublin to Galway / Sligo / Mayo; Limerick to Galway) and Economy 2 (Dublin to Waterford / Rosslare; Limerick to Ballybrophy via Nenagh; Waterford to Limerick Junction) routes for station fares, single, day return and open return.

Existing Family 1-day, and Adult 3-day and 7-day Dublin area Short Hop zone paper tickets are discontinued, having been superseded by Leap Card daily and weekly caps.

All other fares are unchanged.

The Intercity fare changes represent the first booking office fare increases on any Intercity route since 2018, with a reduction of 20% having been implemented in May 2022.

Speaking to RTÉ News, Corporate Communications Manager with Iarnród Éireann Barry Kenny said this is "the first increase on any intercity route in over five years".

"Just two years ago we saw a reduction across the board of 20% in our fares, so even with these increases the vast majority of customers are still paying less than they would have ten years ago."

Tickets purchased online at www.irishrail.ie, or using a TFI Leap card offer the best value in fares.

Half-price fares apply for young adults aged 19-25 years who hold a valid TFI Young Adult Leap Card and students aged 26 years and above who hold a valid Student Leap Card.
