Tributes have been paid in Carlow following the death of Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra of Monacurragh, who died at Montauk yacht harbour in New York in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Councillor Paul Doogue said the passing was “very tragic” and that Martha was “a beautiful young lady, the world was her oyster”.

While he does not know them personally, Doogue stated that “The community will rally around the family”.

“I know as a parent of four myself, it’s so very sad. You can’t envision the heartbreak they’re going through.”

Carlow native and councillor Thomas Kinsella said: “I don’t know the lady but it’s very sad for her family … to happen so far away from home as well, it’s so sad. Particularly for her family and their connections.”

On Wednesday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin spoke to the media regarding Martha’s untimely death.

“It is an absolute devastating blow to the family.  A young, beautiful, very talented, creative woman.”

The Taoiseach went on to say that “Our thoughts and our prayers are with the family” and that Martha’s passing “is a devastating loss for the family and for the community entirely”.

Following a post-mortem examination, the New York Police Department said that there was no evidence of violence in Martha’s death.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have said that consular assistance is currently being provided to the family.
