In his weekly column for the Leinster Express Dr Eddie Murphy looks back at the series gone by and what the leaders have achieved.
Jennifer had massive heart risk history, didn’t exercise, with cholesterol at 8.3, a smoker with irritable bowel syndrome. She quit smoking, cholesterol is 5.3, and enjoys exercise. She has changed her future. Jennifer was trying to cope with the loss of her husband. This is where the true transformation has been made. She has managed to keep the memories and give herself the permission to open a new chapter in her life. The only way to get through grief is to go all the way in and the only way to get past grief is to go through it. Well done Jennifer for teaching us that.
Marc has come a long way. He puts on a tough exterior but underneath is vulnerable and warm. He learnt to put on this tough exterior during early school experiences when he thought he was being judged as a failure. Marc had a tendency for extremes. We focused on him being in the present, aware of emotional trapdoors (being judged). He was at his best when he was centered, connected and balanced. He has a good heart and deep core and is grounded and happy.
Sarah lost 37lbs+, equal to 130,000 calories or 220 big macs! She embraced the motto of one family one meal and is encouraging her family towards a healthier future. She is 24 but had felt like 64 with the worries of the world on her shoulders, particularly the traumatic loss of her infant. Sarah felt she couldn’t be happy as she thought she had to show that she was grieving. She has given herself permission to go on and live her life with happiness and acceptance. A profound change. We celebrate and applaud.
Deirdre’s transformation has been fantastic. She has kicked bad habits of poor eating and no exercise. She started working at 16 caring for others , but has learnt that it’s ok to be there for yourself. Her confidence and self-esteem have soared. Deirdre has taught us that motivation gets you started while good habits keep it going. To quote Deirdre “I found myself and it’s a lovely feeling”.
Siobhan struggled with her roles as mother, wife, sister, daughter, worker, and learner. She was really under pressure and used wine nightly to make her emotions manageable. She is now working smarter rather than harder, and is an inspiration for working mums. Food planning is central to maintaining her weight. What has emerged is her vibrant personality, everything is in balance.
Paudie began with a lot of demons; depressed, angry, binge drinking, withdrawn, disconnected, disillusioned and sad. He has turned his life around, literally. With healthy eating and exercising regularly Paudie has ditched his depression. He is now vibrant, and happy. Paudie can do well when he is fighting and battling. His challenge is to manage things when they are going well and the spotlight is off. Paudie’s Achilles heel is when he feels he is not a winner at these times he feels a loser. Winning is having a structure and engaging everyday with family and friends. Paudie has most importantly connected with himself his family and community. Steady as it goes Paudie. You have shown us that you can change at any age. This championship is for life not nine months.
Oh by the way they all shed loads of pounds and inches!
