Housing estate residents in Portlaoise are been urged to be vigilant following a series of thefts from cars in Esker Hills on Monday night.

The incident saw a number of cars broken into, with a number of items taken including money, bags and electronic equipment.

It is understood that two men in their 20s were seen acting suspiciously in the area between midnight and 4am.

Residents in estates and elsewhere have been warned not to leave any items of value on display in vehicles.

Anyone who may have seen any activity in the Esker Hills area on Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday morning is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 86 74100.
