There is a “huge demand” for spaces in St Peter & Paul’s cemetery in the rapidly expanding town of Portlaoise, according to councillor Mary Sweeney.
She is suggesting the consideration of a crematorium in Laois to deal with the pressure on spaces.
“I can see in Portlaoise there is a huge demand for extra places. This is an area that perhaps there is a need to give more attention to. More people are utilising cremation facilities, but it is a personal choice at a sensitive time,” she said.
Laois County Council has budgeted €250k to finish improvement works in burial grounds around Laois, to make plots available, over the next three years.
There are five crematoria in Ireland, with the nearest to Laois located 50 miles away in Newlands Cross, Dublin.
