Tributes paid to the late John Ireland.
There were tributes to the late John Ireland from Portlaoise at the November meeting of Laois County Council.
“I remember John fondly from the mid 90’s. My sympathies to his family, particularly our staff members Georgina and Dorothy,” said the Chief Executive John Mulholland.
“I am delighted to honour the man. He was from a long established family in Portlaoise, they hold all the records of four generations of people buried in the cemetery, carried on again now by a granddaughter. Anybody looking to find out about their ancestors I send them to an Ireland. John was a very nice person, a great golfer, a talented choir member, and a member of staff here, may the sod rest lightly on him,” said Cllr Willie Aird.
“He had a long history connected to Main Street Portlaoise. John was very particular in his approach to the register. He was a very pleasant guy, a great raconteur and singer. It was nice to see Dorothy and Georgina at our mass for deceased members,” said Cllr Mary Sweeney.
“The Ireland family have made a tremendous contribution. His father was a member of Portlaoise Town Council,” noted Cllr Jerry Lodge.
Mr Ireland from New Road had passed away peacefully at his home on November 4, beloved husband of Dorothy, and father to Georgina, Ann-Marie and Jonathan.
