Mountmellick has been hit hard with flooding from heavy rainfall last night and 20 families have been evacuated from their homes.
Most of these evacuations have taken place on Manor Road, earlier today Liam Preston from Laois Civil Defense said that they were "trying to save a housing estate".
Liam told the Leinster Express that the Civil Defense has been out all morning and that Mountmellick is the worst affected area in Laois.
"Most of Mountmellick, Cloncannon and Clonterry, down by Manor Road we are pulling vehicles out and we are taking families out of their homes, a lot of homes are gone down. This area is completely impassable at the moment we are trying to save a housing estate," he said.
Families in homes on Manor Road are being evacuated by emergency services using boats as their houses have been flooded.
Laois County Council has advised that due to the recent heavy rainfall the N80 is now closed as is many of the adjoining local roads including Ballyfin to Mountmellick Road, Irishtown, Wolfe Tone Street, Manor Lane are all impassible.
Currently 20 families in Mountmellick are being evacuated from their homes as a result of the flooding. Motorists should avoid Mountmellick if possible.
