Laois has one of the highest birth rates in Ireland

Laois has one of the highest birthrates in Ireland.

Evidence that Laois continues to have one of the fastest growing populations in Ireland is found in the latest quarterly birth figures from the Central Statistics Office.

CSO Vital Statistics from April to June 2017 show that the birth rate in Laois is 13.8% per thousand of population. This compares to a national rate of 12.7 per cent.

Figures for the second quarter show that there were 298 births to women living in Laois. This outstrips Kilkenny, Offaly and is just one less the Westmeath.

Outside of Dublin, only Kildare had a higher birth rate in Leinster.

Almost a third of births in the midland counties were to mothers in Laois.

The number of births in Laois is more than double the number of deaths.
