Gardaí close streets in Portlaoise for big hospital protest on Saturday

Gardaí plan for large crowds at Portlaoise Hospital March

Laois Gardaí have issued road closure notices for the Light for Lives march by Portlaoise Hospital Action Group.

The march begins from all outlying roads in Portlaoise, converging on Lower Main Street this Saturday from 5pm until 7pm.

"Main Street will be closed from Market square from 430pm as will the one way systems of Fitzmaurice Place/Church Ave AND Railway Street/Millbrook.

"Traffic will not be allowed onto these roads until event is over. The designated meeting / parking / assembly points are at 1. Old Dunnes Stores Mountmellick Rd. 2. Centrepoint, Mountrath Road. 3. Old ESB premises, Abbeyleix Rd. 4. Fitzpatrick Tyres area Timahoe Road. 5. St Fintans Hospital, Stradbally Road.

A further assembly point is on the Dublin Road, from that side of St Fintan's Hospital.

"Stewards and gardai will be present at each location and will monitor patrons as they march from these locations," the Gardaí say.

They expect a "large crowd".

"Large crowd expected and large traffic delays expected while crowds are making their way to the main assembly point at Lower Main Street. Attendees are requested to be mindful of their safety and that of other road users regarding parking and while on public roads," Laois Gardaí have stated.
