Crash victim set to back Portlaoise hospital at protest

A car crash victim who believes her life was saved by staff at Portlaoise hospital is set to speak against its downgrade at big public protest this weekend.

The Portlaoise Hospital Action Committee said the woman will be among the speakers at a protest which will converge on Main St tomorrow, Saturday, December 2 from six different directions.

Hospital consultant Dr Sean Fleming and GP Dr Michelle Byrne will set out the clinical case for retention of services at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise.

The meeting is also due to be addressed by the three Laois TDs Minster Charlie Flanagan, Sean Fleming and Brian Stanley.

Action Committee chairman Thomas Timmons, secretary John Hanniffy and member Austin Stack are among the speakers.

Gardaí in Portlaoise have issued a road closure notice as a big crowd is expected to descend on the Laois town for the protest.

The HSE's Dublin Midland Hospital Group has drawn up a draft plan to remove maternity, paediatrics, most surgery, ICU and A&E from the hospital.
