Laois Offaly road where school bus skidded was closed and not gritted

Offaly County Council Roads Department has said that The Bog Road in Portarlington where a school bus skidded into a ditch this morning was not gritted as it is "not a priority route".

The road has been closed since Monday, December 11 due to "severe flooding". The local authority published the following road closure on its website on Monday.

"As and from this morning Monday 11th December 2017 the BOG ROAD (L5015-1) in Portarlington is closed to traffic until further notice due to flooding. All traffic should use the main route R420 through Portarlington town instead. We would strongly urge all road users to heed the road closure signs in the area and follow the diversion routes."

This is one of the busy roads that serves Coláiste Íosagáin secondary school in Portarlington which has over 1,000 students.

The road remains closed today as the flooding has not subsided.
