Laois GPs have welcome the announcement of a public consultation on the future of services services at Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise.

The GPs have stood firmly against downgrade and have always demanded consultation with the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group.

While, they are pleased that Minister for Health Simon Harris has ordered such a process, they insist it must mean something.

"We look forward to finally being permitted to engage in a process that we hope will sustain and enhance current services at MRH Portlaoise.

"We expect that this will be a process that will involve real and meaningful engagement on the part of all stakeholders.

"Anything less will not be tolerated," said a statement.

Laois GPs previously rejected the offer of a meeting with Dublin Midlands Hospital Group chief executive, Dr Susan O'Reilly in the absence of a published plan.
