Laois County Council reveals number of homeless applications in 2017

A total of 210 people or families declare themselves homeless in Laois last year.

Laois County Council confirmed that the people presented to the housing department seeking accomodation.

Of those, 71 were provided with permanent accommodation. That included 38 homes owned by Laois County Council, another 19 owned by Approved Housing bodies, 13 were given HAP rental support for private accommodation. One was given accommodation through social leasing, another through private renting.

A further 21 people were given a rental deposit to help them secure private rented accommodation.

Where there is no homeless hostel in Laois, Midlands Simon also provides a Settlement Service in Laois for the homeless. It has five ‘transitional units’ all of which are currently occupied.

The number of applicants waiting for council housing fell by 400 to 1,186 by February 2018.
